• Lahore: A significant cultural, economic, and administrative center, especially crucial for control over the Punjab region and routes to Afghanistan.
• Multan: Important for trade routes and control over Sindh.
• Kabul: Strategically vital for controlling the Khyber Pass and access to Central Asia, though geographically on the periphery of the Indian subcontinent.
• Ajmer: Important for controlling Rajputana.
• Gujarat: A rich maritime province with significant port cities like Surat, crucial for foreign trade and revenue.
• Malwa: A fertile region connecting northern India with the Deccan.
• Awadh (Oudh): A prosperous agricultural province.
• Allahabad: Another important province in the Gangetic plains.
• Bihar: Rich in resources and a vital agricultural region.
• Bengal: One of the wealthiest provinces, known for its textile production and trade.
• Orissa: A coastal province, often administered in conjunction with Bengal or Bihar.
• Khandesh: A key strategic province at the gateway to the Deccan.

These provinces were administered by governors (subahdars) appointed by the emperor, and they formed the backbone of the vast Mughal Empire.
